01-02- A plane coming from Denmark lands at the small airport of Sisimiut. Sisimiut is a village located in the south of Greenland, where the culture and the traditions of the millenary Inuit people are still deeply rooted. The Parents of Nanuk and Llasiak - two young men who are fellow students and friends at the University of Copenhagen - are excitedly waiting on the edge of the tarmac for the visit of their beloved children. The holidays begin and they are going to be able to finally meet again after more than six months without seeing each other.

We find it hard that our Children are growing up, and that we spend less and less Time with them.

03-04-05-06- After all the kisses and hugs, Nanuk happily goes home together with his parents, Suluk and Ulloriak. His father tells him:

-Son: Do you remember that I have always wanted to finish a marathon?

–Yes dad, you have been repeating this since that time when you had to run in fleeing a polar bear…

-HA, HA, HA!! - They all laugh as one -

-You are right! As in September there is a marathon in Copenhagen, and I am seriously thinking of signing up.

-Seriously Suluk? – answers Ulloriak-. But you haven‘t run for years, and you are slower than a lame penguin.

-HAHAHA!!

-Don’t listen to your mother, I am as fit as a fiddle. Between now and September I have time to get ready.

-And you, mom? How are your sculptures going? -Ulloriak is a reputable artist. She creates sculptures that she carves out of Caribou antlers, an ancient Inuit technique that has been transmitted from generation to generation-.

-Now that you mention it… I have been asked to represent our people at the National Caribou Sculpture Contest. I hope to find the inspiration to create a work of art which all can feel proud of.

-Well done mom! I am sure that you will do it very well.

After a short while, they are finally home.

07-08-09-10- Once at home, Nanuk comes clean with his parents:

-Dad, I have to tell you something –Nanuk keeps his head down, feeling truly sorry -. I failed in mathematics.

-I know son, your professor spoke to us. But I want you to understand something; we know that you tried hard, and that for your mother and for me is the most important. Let's make a deal: I have always done well at mathematics. I will help you retake the subject and, in return, you will help me get ready for the marathon. –Ulloriak looks at him sideways while standing at the door and Suluk, who notices this, goes on - And you will also look for Caribou antlers for your mother. What do you reckon?

-Great. When do we start?

-Well, tomorrow first thing at the break of dawn. There is no time to lose.

-OK! I will ask Llasiak to come with us.

 It is an error to punish your Children relentlessly when you have not seen them for a long Time. First they are your CHILDREN, and second they are persons.

11-12-13-14-15- On the following morning, as planned, the three of them go out for a run. In the meantime, Ulloriak is finishing the preparation of a succulent breakfast typical of the region.

-Mom, you cannot imagine how much I missed your cooking.

-My sweetheart, I have missed you a lot indeed…

Before Suluk leaves for work, he dedicates an hour of study to his son and to his son’s friend, who takes advantage of the opportunity to revise the subject. Meanwhile, Ulloriak is thoughtful; inspiration is not coming yet. She knows that not only is it a matter of creating a nice sculpture, it must symbolize a Feeling that will give it a Soul. It is complicated.

To reach any Objective, there is no other formula than first planning and then get going. The main thing is to start…

16-17- Summertime elapses placidly, the days pass by, and as much Nanuk as Suluk faithfully fulfill their part of the deal. Nevertheless, Ulloriak is still unable to find inspiration. The Caribou antlers pile up inert on her workbench. She writes notes that she then discards, worried by the time that is running short while the muses still do not make an appearance.

-Darling –Suluk tells her -, we trust you. It is only a question of time, you will see.

-I know, Suluk – answers Ulloriak while she faintly smiled - only this time I feel that I have a huge responsibility. That's why I want to be completely sure of creating a really special work of art.

-It will be so…

18-19- Nanuk receives a call from Innisaq, a childhood friend whom he has not seen for years

-You gave me one hell of a surprise! How are you?

-Very well! I call you because next Saturday I will be 18, and I am organizing the most amazing of all parties: I will have several tents pitched where we can dance and enjoy. Almost 150 friends from all over Greenland are coming. Nanuk: you and Llasiak have to come…

Nanuk does not think twice. It is summer, he is young and after so much effort, he tells himself: “I deserve a reward“. He talks it over with his parents, to whom he promises to return on Sunday to go on with his studies.

-Of course son, enjoy yourself. You have earned it.

Reward him, Reward yourself…Without forgetting what a Reward means.

20-21-22-23-24-25-26-27-28- Innisaq lives in Itilleq, a small island an hour away by boat. When the ferry comes closer to the wharf, Innisaq is already waiting for them, anxious to see his friends again.

-How nice to see you. Thanks for coming!

-No, thanks to you for inviting us.

-Don’t talk nonsense… You are going to flip out, I have already prepared everything. Let´s go. I´m going to introduce you to my friends.

-Cool!

Friendship, laughter, dancing, good music… they are are having the time of their life. It gives them the sensation that time has stood still for them; there is nothing else than the happiness of living in the moment. So much so that the party goes on till dawn in the mere blink of an eye…

29-30-31-32-33- Suddenly Nanuk, disoriented by sleep and tiredness, opens his eyes.

-Llasiak, wake up! We have overslept.

-What do you mean…?

-Get dressed quickly, the ferry leaves in 10 minutes.

They run as fast as possible, but it is too late. The ferry left port in the direction of Sisimiut, and will not return before next Saturday. Nanuk feels bad about himself. He knows that he promised to return on this very Sunday to go on with his studies, but he is not going to be able to keep his word. Remorseful, he calls his parents to explain this to them.

-Dad, I am sorry to have disappointed you.

-Nanuk, you have to be more responsible – answers Suluk serious-faced. There are only two weeks to go before the exam and you are going to waste an extremely valuable time during which we could have revised together. Nothing can be done about it now. I hope that you realise how serious the matter is.

-Yes dad. I do…

Believe me, we the Children often suffer more for these things than our Parents.

34-35-36-37-38-39-40- One week later, Nanuk and Llasiak come back home. Nanuk meets with his parents.

-Nanuk, you have always been a very responsible boy, I don’t understand how you could have made this error… - Ulloriak interrupts him-.

-Suluk, don‘t be so hard on Nanuk. Remember when you were his age. Because I do remember a certain occasion on which …-Suluk blushes and interrupts her-.

-Okay, well… but that’s not the point right now –says Suluk while clearing his throat-. Anyway, son, we trust you.

-It will not happen again, I have been stupid. I will make up for all the lost time, I promise this to you.

Nanuk comes close to his mother and whispers a few words in her ear. Ulloriak smiles; the inspiration she has been longing for now shines through. She goes to the storage room, grasps a few Caribou antlers and shuts herself in her workroom. They hear how she is carving wood, blow after blow, behind the door.

-Creativity has made an appearance big time –Nanuk thinks to himself-.

Answers come when you least expect them. Everything negative ALWAYS has a Positive side. Always.

41-42- The day has come. It is August 29 and Nanuk, Llasiak and Suluk leave for Denmark. Tomorrow the Mathematics exam will take place, and a few days later, the marathon of Copenhagen.

Ulloriak stays home. She must deliver her sculpture in time for the contest. They say goodbye at the the airport as a tight-knit group, all very emotional. They will meet again again in a few days, just in time for the awaited presentation of the carving work that Ulloriak keeps jealously secret.

43-44-45-46-47-48-49-50-51-52-53-54-55-56-57- Nanuk and Llasiak get up early. Today the exam will take place, and Llasiak helps his friend revise the lesson.

-Llasiak, I am nervous. I have butterflies in my stomach that are killing me.

-Don‘t worry, it‘s normal. This means that you are alert; adrenalin will help you clear your head and concentrate on better solving problems.

Nanuk enters the classroom and starts answering the questions of the exam. Meanwhile, his father waits for him outside, trusting. After a few endless hours, he comes out waiving his arms as a sign of victory. He is convinced that his efforts have been worth it.

-Dad! I think that I passed, and with honours! I have answered all questions. I even had enough time to check my answers.

-Brilliant! I expected nothing less from you. When will they give you the results?

-In a couple of days. Dad, shall we have a drink and afterwards continue with the training before your marathon?

-This sounds really great.

On the same evening and on the following day, they dedicate all their time to training exclusively for the marathon.

The clock rings, it‘s seven o'clock in the morning. Suluk wakes up and starts getting ready for the big event. He is nervous, but trusting. Many things go through his mind; at fifty years of age he is going to finally face the challenge he has had in mind since his youth, and he is going to be able to do it thanks to the help of his son. He is overwhelmed with pride.

They finally give the starting signal. The first stretch did not pose any difficulty to him, but as the kilometers added up, his legs become weaker and his strength lessens. Suluk is not going to give up. He thinks about his family and this gives him the just and necessary energy to continue. After 3 hours and a half, he reaches the goal exhausted. Nanuk and Llasiak hug him. He is almost unable to stand on his own two feet, but he feels truly satisfied; he has finally made his dream come true.

A while later, Nanuk receives a call from University.

-Hello?

-Nanuk, this is Mrs. Leerbeck, your Mathematics professor. I am calling to congratulate you…

-Did I pass?

-With excellent results –Mrs. Leerbeck answers-. You gave me a very pleasant surprise.

Nanuk immediately calls his mother to tell her the good news.

-Mom, I passed with flying colours! - says Nanuk overwhelmed by emotion-.

-I did not have any doubt. I am very proud of you. You make me the happiest mother in the world - answers Ulloriak getting teary eyed-.

You only have one Mother and to make her Happy should be the first Commandment of all.

58-59-60-61- Nanuk, Llasiak and Suluk have embarked again in the direction of Sisimiut, and arrived just on time for the presentation of the carving work by Ulloriak at the Municipal Exhibition Hall. She is already on stage and starts her speech. They still do not know what she has created, so it is a pleasant surprise when the mystery is unveiled.

This carving work represents the family and friendship bonds of the Inuit people. There is a group of bears, two adults and two young ones, who hug each other, happy by a lake –says Ulloriak while pointing at her sculpture-. It was inspired by my own family, by the effort of my beloved son to become a worthy man, in his loyal friend Llasiak, who is always available to help others in an altruistic way, and by the spirit of self-improvement and sacrifice of my husband, who has made his dream of completing a marathon at fifty years of age come true. The bears look at each other in the eyes and say: "I am proud of you!”. In the same way, I say this to you: I am proud of my family and of my people: the INUIT!

A big round of applause floods the exhibition hall. Ulloriak was able to convey the values of this ancient people in a simple work of art. Values that are Universal and turn us all into better persons.

There are plenty of Occasions to say this to our Loved ones… Don’t let them pass by, you will make them very Happy if you do.
